The prospect of Iceland becoming a new EU Member State was welcomed by Diana as the European Parliament supported a resolution dealing with Iceland's application for membership of the European Union in Strasbourg on Wednesday.

The recent unanimous decision by EU leaders to open membership talks with Iceland has now accelerated the start of negotiations.

Diana, a member of the EP Delegation to Iceland, said:

"Iceland is the oldest parliamentary democracy in Europe with a huge contribution to make to the EU in terms of its experience and expertise in fisheries and sustainable energy and its geopolitically strategic position as an Arctic nation."
