Diana speaking at launch

On Wednesday in Brussels Diana spoke at the launch of the book: 'Kreppa: what we should learn from the Icelandic crisis.'

What happened in Iceland in October 2008 has no parallel in history. The small Icelandic economy plunged totally following the collapse of three of the country's largest banks. In the book which includes contributions from experts representing politics, economics, research and media both from within and outside Iceland, an analysis is made of the unfortunate events in the country. The aim of the book is to learn the lesson in order to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future. Kreppa is the Icelandic word for crisis.

Book cover

The book was launched in the European Parliament in the presence of the Icelandic Ambassador to Iceland Mr Stefan Johannesson and Vice President of the Parliament Diana Wallis who contributed a chapter to the book (Icesave - whose debt is it anyway?).

In her contribution Diana draws many parallels between the UK and Icelandic attitude to debt and risk, arguing that the UK recognised a kindred spirit - but accordingly should therefore not have reacted to the extent of using anti-terror legislation against this small Nordic neighbour.
